(p. 120 note) After leaving Kirtland on their journey westward they visited the Wyandot tribe of Indians near Sandusky, Ohio with whom they spent several days. "We were well received," writes Elder Parley P. Pratt, "and had an opportunity of laying before them the record of their forefathers, which we did They rejoiced in the tidings bid us Godspeed and desired us to write to them in relation to our success among the tribes further west, who had already removed to the Indian territory, where these expected soon to go."--Aut. The Indian chiefs remained at Nauvoo until the Prophet returned and had his trial. During their stay they had a talk with Hyrum Smith in the basement of the Nauvoo House. Wilford Woodruff and some others were present. They were not free to talk, and did not wish to communicate their feelings until they could see the great Prophet.

At length, on the 2nd day of July, 1843, President Joseph Smith and several of the Twelve met those chiefs in the court-room, with about twenty of the elders. The following is a synopsis of the conversation which took place as given by the interpreter:--

The Indian orator arose and asked the Prophet if the men who were present were all his friends. Answer--"Yes." He then said--"We as a people have long been distressed and oppressed. We have been driven from our lands many times. We have been wasted away by wars, until there are but few of us left. The white man has hated us and shed our blood, until it has appeared as though there would soon be no Indians left. We have talked with the Great Spirit, and the Great Spirit has talked with us. We have asked the Great Spirit to save us and let us live; and the Great Spirit has told us that he had raised up a great Prophet, chief, and friend, who would do us great good and tell us what to do; and the Great Spirit has told us that you are the man (pointing to the Prophet Joseph). We have now come a great way to see you, and hear your words, and to have you to tell us what to do. Our horses have become poor traveling, and we are hungry. We will now wait and hear your word."

The Spirit of God rested upon the Lamanites, especially the orator. Joseph was much affected and shed tears. He arose and said unto them: "I have heard your words. They are true. The Great Spirit has told you the truth. I am your friend and brother, and I wish to do you good. Your fathers were once a great people. They worshiped the Great Spirit. The Great Spirit did them good. He was their friend; but they left the Great Spirit, and would not hear his words or keep them. The Great Spirit left them, and they began to kill one another, and they have been poor and afflicted until now.

The Great Spirit has given me a book, and told me that you will soon be blessed again. The Great Spirit will soon begin to talk with you and your children. This is the book which your fathers made. I wrote upon it (showing them the Book of Mormon). This tells what you will have to do. I now want you to begin to pray to the Great Spirit. want you to make peace with one another, and do not kill any more Indians: it is not good. Do not kill white men; it is not good; but ask the Great Spirit for what you want, and it will not be long before the Great Spirit will bless you, and you will cultivate the earth and build good houses like white men. We will give you something to eat and to take home with you."

When the Prophet's words were interpreted to the chiefs, they all said it was good. The chief asked, "How many moons would it be before the Great Spirit would bless them?" He [Joseph] told them, Not a great many. At the close of the interview, Joseph had an ox killed for them, and they were furnished with some more horses, and they went home satisfied and contented.

things i always thought were strange about the lds church

i grew up a member of the lds church and after a recent intense period of reading, researching and rethinking, im finally seeing it for what it is: a very wealthy church, who, for the most part are trying to teach people to do good. but it is not everything it claims to be.

here are some things ive always thought were strange (this will be an ongoing list):
* claiming how special and unique the book of mormon was and how many members there have become over the years. i always compared this claim to the koran and islam. the koran is larger and there are *way* more muslims than mormons.

* healing and prophecy. i believe these things exist. i dont think the church has the monopoly though. i was recently discussing these things with an lds friend who expressed that he believed that non-lds (or men who do not have the priesthood) who healed people were doing it by the power of the devil. i remember being taught this several times as a missionary. i always thought this was bogus. it is bogus and i think i was able to convince my friend how silly that notion is, simply by recalling the lds pioneer story about the woman who healed an ox that was wounded. the lds church doesnt teach its priesthood holders to heal animals (i think you would get called in for a meeting with the bishop if anybody heard you had done something like that) and only priesthood holders (men) give blessings (heal people). concerning prophecy, there are tons of people in and out of the church who have this gift. and what have been the real huge prophecies in my lifetime in the church? somebody asked me once and i seriously didnt have an answer. it was embarassing =)

* greatly varying opinions on sexual matters like oral sex, masturbation and birth control.
oral sex: the bottom line is noone in the church has the right to tell you what you and your wife/husband can and cant do in your bedroom. i had bishops who have said oral sex is a sin while others said that the church has no policy. my mother told me that her bishop even asked her once (or several times?) if she performed oral sex on her husband. she told him it was none of his business.
masturbation: there is literally no scripture in *any* of the lds standard works about masturbation, yet it is unanimously accepted as being a sin. but again, bishops always had a difference of opinion about its sinful severity. (i guess youre asking to yourself and giggling "how does he know?" yes. i have masturbated. masturbation is actually a great tool/help especially in relationships where the level of sexual desire of partners is very unbalanced.) i am currently reading an interesting book called masturbation: the history of a great terror. i suggest every religious person read it.

* how everyone in general conference puts on some fake voice/way of speaking while praying or giving a talk.

* why church needed to be so long?!

* why people would get their children to bear their testimony and use words like "i know". along the same lines: i could never imagine 8 year olds really being eligible to be deemed sinners and how in the world they could choose and know what they are doing when they get baptized.

* how my mission president taught how vital it was to take the sacrament, that if you died after doing something wrong and werent able to take the sacrament before you died, that somehow your repentance wasnt complete. i always thought that was ridiculous.

* how much more relaxed and open about everything in general i was compared to everyone else in the church

* how sunday never seemed to be a day of rest, especially after starting my own family. it was almost always a day of stress. thats "rest" with 2 extra s's.

* why did it matter how people dressed to come to church?

* why most of the church leaders always seemed to be rich and/or businessmen.

* why the church was never open about issues like polygamy. i never remember any lesson ever addressing this topic specifically. it was like the church was ashamed of it and tried to just keep it in the past, while it was a major part of the early church history.

* why talks and articles and even the scripture footnotes often refer to "history of the church" volumes, but these have never been available online.

questions for the lds church

im labeling this one uq AND aq because i feel at least some of these questions are rhetorical. this is an ongoing list of things i have been thinking about for a long time.

heres a simple case set:
you are a father/mother and have 4 children; sonA and daughterA choose to be baptized and become members of the lds church and sonB and daughterB chose not to become a member, but all live equally "worthy",

* the gift of the holy ghost - an "open line" to guidance from god as long as one lives "worthy".
would you restrict or down-prioritize contact with sonB because he chose not to be baptized (lower himself down into some water), even though he lived just as "worthy" as sonA? would you be less inclined to speedily help daughterB when she asked you for help or guidance?
(this is an example of one of the rhetorical questions =)

along the same lines, if we are asked to have unconditional love, to mirror jesus christ, in other words, god/jesus christ have unconditional love, and god is no respecter of persons, then i cant get this to add up.

* also similar to the previous question, if baptism is a requirement to return to god and live with him and inherit everything he has. would you give your children a mandate that they must lower themselves underneath water and make them promise to be obedient to you, otherwise they get no inheritance or a lot less inheritance from you when you die? and furthermore, not be allowed to live in your presence forever more? i dont know of anybody on earth who does this, although there might be some who do, but i think the general public opinion would think that person is unloving and wicked and unfair. if daughterB said to you, "father, i dont see any point in lowering my self down in some water, but i will promise to live to be as loving and nice of a person as daughterA", would you still say "then you will never see my face again" or "then you will get no inheritance from me" or "well i will have to cut your inheritance to half of daughterA and i will never allow you to come to this house again. i want to see you go down in some water. that is the most important part! this is what is really important to me!".

this is ongoing since i just got it today. just to be clear, when i say "review" i mean things i think are interesting or unclear to me the first time i read them. it is not a general summary of the book. that said, here are my thoughts and questions:

since they are seen as having a subtle body of sorts, the threat of pain is also commonly used.

i was under the impression that spirits and demons were just spirits (unembodied). i have always learned that a spirit looks like a body, but since it doesnt have a body it cant feel physical pain. i thought immediately of a quote from Chapter 37: Understanding Death and Resurrection, Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Brigham Young (page 273):

My spirit is set free, I thirst no more, I want to sleep no more, I hunger no more, I tire no more, I run, I walk, I labor, I go, I come, I do this, I do that, whatever is required of me, nothing like pain or weariness, I am full of life, full of vigor, and I enjoy the presence of my heavenly Father, by the power of his Spirit. I want to say to my friends, if you will live your religion, live so as to be full of the faith of God, that the light of eternity will shine upon you, you can see and understand these things for yourselves” (DNSW, 28 July 1874, 1).

Q. can spirits and/or demons feel pain? or is it just a mental/psychological pain (of which i believe spirits can experience, but since he mentions the subtleness of the demons body, im inclined to think he means physical pain)?

i am finding that a lot of literature is available online, try searching for the title + pdf, e.g.:

a good idea is to read user reviews of books on amazon, and not just the 5 star ones, read them all. look for reviews with specifics and even recommendations of other books. i always start from the bottom (1 star reviews) then work my way up. exercise caution with books with only 5 stars from only a handful of reviewers.
